Who we are
QUT Heartbeats is a student-led engineering team from Queensland University of Technology driven by a shared ambition to shape the future of cardiac support technology.
Our multidisciplinary team brings together students across mechanical, electrical and medical engineering to design and develop a next-generation Total Artificial Heart (TAH) for international competition and future medical innovation. As the first Queensland team to enter the Heart Hackathon, we are proud to take on one of healthcare’s most demanding engineering challenges.
At Heartbeats, we believe engineering can make a real difference. Through research, simulation, design and prototyping, we are creating more than a device; we are building skills, collaboration and ideas that could contribute to the future of cardiac care.

Dr. Andrew Stephens
Academic Supervisor | Biomedical Engineer
Dr Andrew Stephens provides academic leadership and technical guidance for the QUT Heartbeats team. Through his expertise in biomedical engineering and translational research, he helps bridge the gap between engineering innovation and real-world clinical application, supporting students as they tackle one of medicine’s greatest challenges.
Prof. Shaun Gregory
Clinical Advisor | Team Supporter
Shaun Gregory brings invaluable clinical insight to the Heartbeats team, helping ensure our engineering decisions remain grounded in patient outcomes and surgical reality. His involvement provides students with direct exposure to the challenges faced within modern cardiovascular medicine.
Dr. Daniel Timms
BiVACOR Founder & CTO | QUT Alumnus
QUT alumnus Dr Daniel Timms is the founder of BiVACOR and inventor of one of the world’s first durable Total Artificial Hearts. His technology has successfully reached human implantation and represents one of Australia’s most significant biomedical engineering achievements, inspiring the next generation of QUT engineers working to transform cardiac care.
